The UK is seeing plenty of sunshine this July, with temperatures expected to reach nearly 30°C in England and Wales. According to the Met Office, the UK expects temperatures to rise towards the end of July.
During heat waves and hot sticky nights, it is essential to know how to keep your house cool for the summer. Let’s share some tried and tested tips to make your summers pleasant.
1. Block The Sun Out
Blocking the sun may seem obvious, but some people love to let the sunlight in. But, in order to keep your house cool for the summer, you have to resist the temptation and keep blinds and curtains closed during the day or try purpose-built indoor window shades to help keep the heat at bay.
2. Allow Fresh Air Come In
As the heat drops during the late afternoon, you should open the windows to let the fresh air come in. At night the temperature falls considerably, so opening windows in the evening will allow cool air to circulate around the house. To avoid flies and mosquitos, try investing in a net.
3. Switch To Suitable Bedding
Replace your favourite 13 tog duvet with some plain cotton sheets. Cotton bed sheets are cool, breathable and known to improve sleep in the summer. Pillow inserts are also an option and can be used at night when it gets too hot. Satin sheets are also suitable in warm climates and are less expensive than silk.
4. Invest In House Plants
Indoor plants are a natural and healthy way to keep your house cool for the summer. Their natural process consumes hot air and often releases excess water into the air from their leaves. As a result, they tend to cool themselves and the surrounding environment.
5. Turn Of Lights And Extra Appliances
We all know that light bulbs give off heat, so to keep the house cool for the summer, turning off extra lights and switching to energy-saving bulbs can be helpful.
Similarly, turn off extra electrical appliances whenever possible because they radiate heat and add to indoor temperature.
While the kids are home, you can plan outdoor activities to enjoy your summers and stay healthy as well.
